See You on the Other Side

See You on the Other Side is an integrated arts program dedicated to social and emotional wellbeing of students and surrounding communities.

Our pilot project began in 2021 at Amarosa Academy in collaboration with the students, community volunteers, and independent artists sponsored by Artstart. The mural, a 480 ft long artifact of the collaboration, transforms the entire courtyard of Amarosa Academy, an alt-ed secondary school run by Sonoma County of Education in Santa Rosa, CA. An homage to the strange, beautiful, and sometimes difficult transitions the teen students are navigating, the playful and bold mural is a visual metaphor for their labyrinth-like journey of inner and outer transformation.

More than a mural, lead artists Erika Lutz, Alina Nuebel, and Kaya Rose facilitated over 100 people to paint the picture of a place to belong, heal, and grow. See You on the Other Side is a gesture of collective resilience through the spirit of creativity and the art of human connection.

This went far beyond anything I imagined. Amarosa has been forever changed - both physically and in spirit.

I’m sure this experience is one that students will remember long after their time here.

Going Deep

Creative educators Erika Lutz, Alina Nuebel, and Kaya Rose empowered the students of Amarosa Academy to translate their collective story into a mural, creating a sense of belonging and pride with the support of community.

Through our creative workshops, we created a safe and inspiring environment for teens to share their personal stories while practicing mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills.

Along the way, we enabled teens to envision the role of artists as creators of cultural change. Teens learned the practical and technical skills to express themselves with imagery, ideas, and action.

This project completely changed the way I think about being here.

Painting with you guys isn’t just about the paint... you make me think about the world in a deeper way.

See You on the Other Side supports the social and emotional well-being of students by embedding artists within schools and communities.

Our pilot program at Amarosa Academy was made possible by a AB 86 Expanded Learning Opportunities grant, Sonoma County Vintners Foundation community grant, generous volunteers and private donations.
